We have lost a giant. Steve was a strong force in everything he did. He was also the kind of man that if you knew him, even a little bit, your life was better for it. Many years ago, I was the family's nanny and spent many happy hours playing with Rachie and Julia (Joey was too old for a nanny!). The family welcomed me into their family immediately. Through trips and family parties, I had the honor of getting to know Steve well. We shared a love of history and politics. When I was working on my masters in history, he even proofread a paper for me (and marked it up like you wouldn't believe!), he was just that kind of man. He was also a wonderful friend to my late father. Aside from his passion for life and his work in the legal community, Steve exuded such devotion and love for his family that it was a beautiful thing to experience. To his lovely children, who know how much he loved you, he also showed it to everyone else. Much love and comfort to you all.

I remember sitting outside at a friend's cottage in Canada and chatting with with Steve, when we were both young attorneys, right after he had come home from serving in Desert Storm, and being so impressed. Steve certainly did not need to be serving in the reserves and putting his life risk, taking time off from his legal career (at that time at Saperston and Day). It was really unheard of! He truly wanted to serve his country! An amazing human being in his own right, even if there never was any Cellino and Barnes. My thoughts and prayers are with Rich Barnes and the rest of Steve's family.

Sending heartfelt condolences to Josiah, Marian, the entire Barnes family, and Ellen Sturm, on the tragic loss of Steve that you must endure. Steve and his family were neighbors for years and that is when my daughter Esther became fast friends with Josiah (Joe as we called him). That friendship lasted and Steve always welcomed Esther to gatherings of family and friends over the years. I am grateful that I was able to spend time with Marian and Ellen because of Esther's friendship with the family, which she has always treasured. His contributions were many. The loss is great because the love was great. I know that the family will support one another through this most devastating time and that somehow, the memories shared and Steve's love for each of you, and your love for him, will always be with you throughout your lives. May his memory always be for blessing. Holly

In sorrow, I offer heartfelt condolences to Rich, to Steve's mother and children, and to Ellen Strum.
Steve and I were briefly colleagues at Moot & Sprague at the beginning of our practices.
Steve was always so kind to me. We last talked at length at the wake for Deborah Sorbini Barnes,
who was perhaps the most gracious lawyer I dealt with in my practice, even though we were on opposite sides of a criminal case.
Steve will be missed. Rich, I feel deeply your losses. I too have lost a child. There is no loss more terrible.
I hold you close to my heart.
Marilyn Hochfield, Esq.
