William G. Gourlay of Cheektowaga NY passed away peacefully in his home on December 28, 2024. Bill was a graduate of Amherst High School Class of 1962 and served Honorably in the United States Marine Corps from 1962 - 1968. He was retired from the Erie County Sheriff's Office after a distinguished 34-year Law Enforcement career, highlighted by being honored as the only two-time recipient of the William R. Dils Award as Deputy of the Year, recognizing bravery and courage in the performance of Duty. A long tenured member of the Sheriff's SWAT Team, Bill designed and led the construction of the Sheriff's SWAT Range in Alden NY without any public funding that today is the premiere tactical training center in the region. He organized the first Queen of Heaven Carnival and volunteered for many years as chairman and other roles. He belonged to both the Knights of Columbus and the Police Emerald Society. He was predeceased by his loving wife Eileen who he was married to for over forty years. He is survived by his three children, William M. Gourlay (wife Rebecca), Kathleen (husband Gerald Fibich) and Timothy Gourlay (wife Melissa. He is survived by his eight grandchildren Jacob and Lauren Fibich, Madeleine, Katie, and William M Gourlay II, and Danny, Joey and Katie Gourlay. He is survived by his brother John and sister-in-law Linda Gourlay. He is predeceased by his sisters Patricia Yeager and Sharon Guffner. He also leaves behind many extended family, nephews, nieces and dear friends. Beloved husband of 48 years to the late Eileen (Berst); Longtime companion of Kathy Donnelly; Loving father of William (Rebecca), Kathleen (Gerald) Fibich and Timothy (Melissa) Gourlay. Grandfather of Jacob, Lauren (Mike), Madeleine, Katie, William II, Danny, Joey and Katie. Brother of John (Linda) Gourlay. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Friends may call Friday from 4-8 at the JAMES W.CANNAN FUNERAL HOME INC.3155 Orchard Park Rd. 716-675-9027. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday at 9:30AM at Queen of Heaven Church. Please assemble at church. Mr. Gourlay was a USMC Veteran and a retired Erie County Sheriff.
