With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Jean Burkett on November 13, 2023, at South Buffalo Mercy Hospital, following a brief illness. Jean's life was defined by an unwavering dedication to the well-being of others, both human and animal. Jean worked in social services for 12 years, leaving an indelible impact on the lives of those she served. Her role as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) at Brothers of Mercy and The Courtyards spanned over a decade, showcasing not only her professional skills but also a genuine concern for the well-being of those under her care. Jean's compassion extended far beyond the workplace; she frequently opened her home to individuals in need, providing solace during challenging times. A passionate advocate for animals, Jean's devotion spoke volumes. She trained a seeing-eye dog for the blind, personally cared for hundreds of animals over her lifetime, collaborated with many local rescues to find homes for animals, and served as the director in Residence for Yahweh's Animal Shelter in Wyoming County for four years. Her leadership was marked by a profound love for animals and an unwavering commitment to their welfare. Jean, predeceased by her beloved parents, Kathleen and Donald Burkett, is survived by her siblings Joan Cole, James Burkett, and Thomas (Cynthia) Burkett, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Known for her sharp wit, great sense of humor, and prolific writing, Jean enriched our lives with laughter, wisdom, and boundless compassion. In honoring Jean's memory, the family kindly requests donations to any local animal rescue organization. Additionally, they encourage family and friends to consider adopting an animal in need of a loving home. Jean's legacy lives on in the hearts of those she cared for and the lives of the animals she rescued and loved.
