DEAR JOE AND LOVING FAMILY,
I CAN'T IMAGINE THE PAIN AND SORROW YOU MUST HAVE FELT WHEN YOU MADE THAT CALL TO ME. THE SAME CALL YOU HAD TO MAKE TO OTHERS WHO LOVED CAROLYN. I STILL CAN'T BELIEVE IT AND MY HEART BREAKS FOR YOU AND THE FAMILY. I AM SO VERY, VERY SORRY.
I KNOW THERE IS NOTHING I CAN SAY THAT WILL BE A COMFORT TO YOU BUT I WOULD LIKE TO TELL YOU WHAT YOUR BEAUTIFUL WIFE, MOTHER, GRANDMOTHER MEANT TO ME AND HOW MY LIFE IS BETTER FOR HAVING KNOWN HER.
JOE, YOUR WONDERFUL TRIBUTE TO CAROLYN SPEAKS VOLUMES. PARTS OF IT BROUGHT ME BACK TO OVER 60 YEARS AGO WHEN WE WOULD HAVE SLEEPOVERS, STAY UP LATE AND TELL EACH OTHER OUR SECRETS. I REMEMBER ALL THROUGH THOSE YEARS I CALLED HER CAROLYN, ALWAYS CAROLYN, NEVER ANYTHING ELSE. IN THE MORNING WE WOULD COME DOWN THE STAIRS AND SIT AT THE TABLE WITH HER MOM AND THE THREE OF US WOULD CHAT. IT WAS WARM AND INVITING, JUST LIKE CAROLYN. EVEN THEN YOU JUST KNEW THAT SHE WOULD MAKE HER MARK ON THE WORLD. I WAS HAPPY SHE CHOSE ME AS HER FRIEND.
WE CONTINUED OUR CLOSE RELATIONSHIP AND WERE BRIDES MAIDS FOR EACH OTHERS WEDDINGS. CAROLYN WAS ALWAYS LOVELY TO LOOK AT AND ON HER WEDDING DAY SHE WAS ESPECIALLY BEAUTIFUL. YOU COULD SEE THE INNER BEAUTY OF HER FILTERING THROUGH THAT GORGEOUS DRESS. JOE, SHE WAS INCREDIBLY HAPPY. WHAT A GREAT COUPLE YOU MADE. SHE COULDN'T HAVE PICKED A BETTER PARTNER AND SHE KNEW THAT. YOU SPENT OVER FIFTY YEARS TOGETHER CREATING AN INDESTRUCTIBLE BOND AND AN AMAZING FAMILY TO BE PROUD OF.
I AM SO HAPPY CAROLYN GOT TO EXPERIENCE THE AWESOME WOW OF YOUR 50TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY ADVENTURE. SHE MESSAGED ME FROM NAPLES SAYING SHE WOULD BE OFF TO CAPRI THE NEXT DAY. I TOLD HER WHEN SHE GOT TO ALMAFI TO CHECK OUT THE LEMONS THE SIZE OF SMALL CANTALOUPES AND THE LEMONCELLO THEY MAKE WITH THEM. SHE WAS ALL IN FOR THE LEMONCELLO AND WAS GOING TO BRING SOME BACK WITH HER. SADLY I DON'T KNOW IF SHE DID.
CAROLYN WOULD TELL YOU LIKE IT IS SO IF YOU DIDN'T WANT TO KNOW THE TRUTH YOU DIDN'T ASK HER. I LOVED THAT ABOUT HER. I AM HER BIGGEST FAN AND BELIEVE I AM A BETTER WOMAN BECAUSE OF HER. CAROLYN PUT HERSELF OUT THERE AND UNSELFISHLY CHOSE TO DO THINGS THAT WOULD HELP OTHERS IN MANY WAYS. SHE WOULD WORK AT HAVING PEOPLE REALIZE THEIR POTENTIAL. ON A PERSONAL LEVEL SHE HELPED ME WITH THAT TOO. I REGRET I NEVER GOT TO SEE HER TEACH. I KNOW SHE WAS AMAZING AND I WOULD HAVE LOVED TO HAVE SEEN HER IN ACTION. I MOVED 3,000 MILES AWAY FROM WNY AND EVEN THOUGH WE VISITED EACH OTHER THERE WAS NEVER AN OPPORTUNITY TO SEE HER IN HER CLASSROOM.
I CAN SEE CAROLYN'S BIG SMILE WHEN SHE SPOKE OF HER CHILDREN AND HER GRANDCHILDREN WHICH WAS OFTEN. I WILL ALWAYS BE GRATEFUL FOR OUR WHAT'S APP VIDEOS BECAUSE NOW, EVEN WHEN I CLOSE MY EYES I CAN SEE HER. I WON'T EVER FORGET THOSE SMILES. CAROLYN GAVE HERSELF FULLY TO JOE AND TO HER FAMILY. SHE LOVED YOU ALL DEEPLY. SHE WAS SO PROUD OF ALL OF YOU. SHE WOULD BE THE FIRST TO SAY SHE HAD A WONDERFUL LIFE. I WISH SO MUCH THAT YOU HAD MORE TIME WITH HER.
HOLD EACH OTHER CLOSE,
LOVE,
TONI ROMAN SHAPIRO, VANCOUVER CANADA

This news just breaks our hearts! Carolyn and Joe lived next door to my parents, Robert and Sylvia St-Pierre, for many years. They would welcome me, my sister, Linda, and our friend/neighbor, Kathleen into their home and to many parties, etc. with open arms. It was always fun at their house! We all watched Jeffrey and Julie grow up. Kathleen and I were their babysitters for many years. After they moved we continued to be very good friends and would always find time to share lunch in the summer months! She was a good neighbor, and a good friend who will be greatly missed!

To the Mooney Family,
Even though I have been friends with Julie since the 6th grade I've known Mrs. Mooney since the 3rd grade. Because of Mrs. Mooney I still describe the state of New York like Snoopy's head. Because of Mrs. Mooney I thought about going to college, no one in my family ever had. Because of Mrs. Mooney I once at way too many leftover shrimp in their kitchen as she tried to talk me out of joining the Navy. Now after my 20 years in the Navy, she lost that fight. Because of Mrs. Mooney I wrapped so many presents for Zonta each Christmas, which deep down I loved doing. Because of Mrs. Mooney Julie, Jamie and I got to watch that stupid VHS of A Very Brady Christmas just about every year.
She was an incredible mother, educator and mentor. We will all miss the humor and honesty she brought to all our lives.
Enjoy that great classroom in the sky Mrs. Mooney!
Love, everyone's least favorite student, Nicolette Cooper

Dear Joe,
Words fail me in expressing the overwhelming feelings that hold me. Carolyn was such a beautiful presence amongst us, her grace and kindness touching so many hearts.
She lived her life giving witness to the values in which she so deeply believed - her faith in a Loving God, and her love of country, always appreciating those who served, especially both her parents, you, Joe, and her friends, including me :)) But most importantly, it was her family she cherished. Her eyes would sparkle brightly as she spoke of you, as they did when she spoke of Jeff, and Julie and Jeff, and Cameron, Anna, Patrick and Nina…..and her siblings and her extended family…..and her many friends.
I was blessed to have shared friendship with her since we were 3 year old little girls- this friendship extended over 70 years, and I am so grateful for this blessing in my life. Robert and I together, have also been privileged to share in her (and your) friendship. Such a gift to us. The light of her love has deeply touched us and continues to embrace us. Thank God!
We extend our deepest sympathy to you, Joe. We continue to hold you and your family in our hearts and in our prayers.
Love, Marilyn and Robert

Dear Joe,
Just returned home from Carolyn’s Celebration of Life Mass. It was beautifully done and a true tribute to your beautiful wife. Fr. Walt’s words said it all. I know how honored she would have been that he connected so many facets of her life with her teaching career. In all that she did, she taught us all by her exemplary life.
She learned the right lessons in life and passed them on to all she encountered along the way. It certainly was my privilege to have known her for so many years. We weren’t always close, but our copious encounters along the way as our paths intertwined, from Kindergarten till this past August, were most memorable as well as enjoyable.
I know you are so proud of the fabulous job Julie did on the Eulogy. Beautifully composed, tenderly and lovingly inclusive and expertly delivered. It was fabulous. Carolyn too is so proud of how empowered her daughter is. A true example of the Zonta mission.
Although it is never easy to say goodbye, Carolyn has fought the fight, she has won the race, now may she rest in peace.
Affectionately, Rozanne Granville Flammer

Joe and family,
We spent the last 3 or 4 winters in Florida literally down the street from Joe and Carolyn. Since that time we have enjoyed their friendship and witnessed the loving bond between them. Carolyn loved the sun and we spent many a day with them sitting by the pool or beach enjoying the nice weather and camaraderie. Then off to happy hour and/or dinner. So quickly things change. Our sadness can’t be put in words. The tribute done by Joe says it all. She was a beautiful, articulate person. A friend to all who knew her. We are going to miss her immensely but she will live on in our hearts and minds.

Joe, Jeff, Julianne and family....Our deepest condolences for the loss of such a great "citizen" to our community as confirmed by such an overwhelming crowd at the funeral. We agree on all the tributes but would like to add one more on her helping perpetuate the education system in Hamburg by her relationship with Fredonia and the many interns. We all die twice, once physically and the second time is when family and friends stop talking about or remembering you. If today's remembrance is any harbinger, Carolyn Mooney will be alive forever! Dear Jeff, Joe and Julie,
I first met Carolyn as an intern in the Fredonia-Hamburg program in 1996-97. As the student intern on the steering committee, I had the special opportunity to get to know her professionally and see her passion firsthand. Over the next 25 years, I had several opportunities to work with her again, both as a fellow adjunct faculty and then as a guest speaker in her class. This is where our personal friendship formed. Carolyn held high standards for herself and all those she worked with. She lived with integrity, good humor, and a tireless work ethic. She was always supportive of me in my career wherever I went and always encouraged me to represent Hamburg and Fredonia proudly. I'm so sad to hear this news and to learn that she has left us too soon. She made an inedible mark on my life, and I'm sure scores of students, colleagues, and her community. Thank you for sharing her with us all. I will miss her.
Sincerely,
Brandon Wiley

Dear Joe and family. We have known Carolyn for at least 40 years. In that time we have socialized at the family home, with other friends and on vacation many times. Carolyn was a great lady and fun to be with. We remember the Caribbean cruise a number of years ago where we had a great time and were with so many great friends. She will be missed by all of us. Our prayers are with Joe and the family at this sad time. We're sure she is in a better place watching over all of us.

If we are fortunate, we will encounter a few people who make us happy to have merely known them. If we are very lucky, such a person will be an enduring friend, enriching our lives with the quality of theirs. Carolyn was such a person and while I know Joe and all those who knew and loved her are devastated by her passing, I am quite confident we haven’t heard the last from her. I know she will continue to watch over her kids and Joe and send love and peace and consolation from her place in heaven just as she did here among us. We lost a loving, caring, kind woman but we gained an angel who will continue to love us as we loved her.
