Obituary of Joseph T. Gannon
Please share a memory of Joseph to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Jospeh Gannon was the oldest of 10 children, raised on Woodside Avenue in South Buffalo. He was a graduate of Father Baker High School. He married the love of his life Tina, and they spent 61 years together to his very last breath. Joseph was the father of five children and grandfather to 13 children.
A man of all trades, Joe had a very brief stint in the seminary, then joined the US Army 82 nd Airborne as a paratrooper. He later served in the Army Corps of Engineers but was also a steamfitter and a draftsman for Bel Aircraft before settling in to a 20-year career as a Buffalo Firefighter mostly with Engine 32, Ladder 5.
A continuous learner, he went back to college while working full time and graduated with honors from Canisius College in 1975 with a degree in accounting. After retiring from the Buffalo Fire Department, he opened his own accounting practice supporting many of the businesses in South Buffalo for over 30 years.
A renaissance man with a million hobbies and many friends, Joe was an athlete – an avid golfer, a handball player and swimmer with his friends at the Knights of Columbus and basketball player. He was a card shark with his pals at Gene McCarthy’s, a voracious reader, a talented artist who preferred charcoal and watercolor. He was a DIYer well before HGTV.
He was a proud member of the Blackthorns. He trusted deeply in God with his faith serving as comfort throughout his life and more recently with his many health challenges.
We’re sure he’s enjoying a Snickers bar and a Manhattan with the angels.
Fondest memories of his grandchildren include feeding cheerios to the ducks by Caz Creek, receiving golf lessons, learning to fish with him and being teased by him popping out his false teeth. They cherished every trip to Fran and Ceils and Custard Corner for ice cream and chatting over breakfast at Apollo.
He exemplified resilience, faith, and most of all love for family.
